Wednesday
Morning
8:00 a.m. I get ready and practice my argument a couple of times in front of the mirror. Although I’m a bit nervous about the oral arguments this morning, I’m excited at the same time.
9:15 a.m. I arrive at the office and scarf down a few pieces of fruit before the motion workshop begins.
10:00 a.m. It’s my time to shine. Partner Tom Blair, Judge, presiding. I argue that the statute of limitations has run on the plaintiff’s claim, and opposing counsel (an OC summer associate) brings a motion to exclude certain evidence at trial. In spite of my motion being denied, this is my favorite workshop of the week.
Afternoon
1:00 p.m. We eat lunch in the conference room and listen to a presentation by Partner Wally Christensen on examining witnesses at trial.
2:00 p.m. I have to prepare for the witness examination workshop the following morning. I meet up with two DC summer associates who are in my group to devise a strategy and to divide up the questions for examination. This time, we’ll be examining our client as if we are at trial. In addition, we’ll be cross-examining the plaintiff’s wife.
3:00 p.m. I run back to the hotel to prepare my examination. We’re playing in a softball game against another firm at 6:00 p.m., and if possible, I’d like to finish preparing beforehand.
6:00 p.m. Let’s (attempt to) play ball! Our opponents give us a run for our money, and unfortunately, we’ll have to chalk this one up as a loss.
8:00 p.m. We arrive at a local pub for some post-game cheer. The pub is packed with teams from DC’s various softball leagues. It’s nice to see the camaraderie and sense of community in our Nation’s capital.
9:30 p.m. I and a few summer associates decide to go for a night tour of the monuments.
11:30 p.m. We arrive back at the hotel. I shower and call it a night.
