Saturday
Morning
7:00 a.m. I wake up and get ready for the mock trial. After glancing over the deposition transcript of Dr. Carrera one last time, I walk to the nearest Starbucks – I really am no good without my coffee in the morning.
8:30 a.m. We make our way over to the Federal District Court for the District of DC. The court is closed on Saturdays, but they graciously allow us to use their courtrooms for our mock trial.
9:30 a.m. Trial begins. I’m a witness for the defense, so I sit and observe as plaintiff’s counsel put on their case.
11:30 a.m. The defense calls Dr. Carrera. That’s me. I’m examined by an associate from the Chicago office and cross-examined by an associate from the DC office. They throw a couple of curve balls at me, but nothing that an ‘expert physician’ with my extensive medical background can’t handle.
Afternoon
1:00 p.m. Trial ends and we celebrate over lunch at Gordon Biersch.
2:30 p.m. I accompany a couple of summer associates to a museum of modern art.
4:30 p.m. We return to the hotel to get ready for dinner at the home of Partner Paul Vitrano. Paul lives in Virginia, about a half an hour away, so we all hop in the ‘party van’ and taxi over there.
5:30 p.m. We arrive at Paul’s home and enjoy a delicious dinner in the company of DC partners and associates.
9:30 p.m. The ‘party van’ returns to pick us up and take us back into DC. When we arrive, we head over to a local pool hall near the hotel for some billiards.
12:00 a.m. Fatigue is setting in. I and four summer associates walk back to the hotel. When we arrive, we go back to my room and end up chatting for a few hours.
3:00 a.m. Time to say our goodbyes. After the group leaves, I click on the TV and doze off.
