A Week in the Life of Sara Doran
Friday
Morning 9:00 a.m. On Friday mornings the firm provides breakfast in the break room, and it’s always nice to start the day by chatting with other people in the office. One of the partners, Clint Cameron, is going to the Wisconsin State Fair this weekend with his family, so this morning’s breakfast conversation largely centers on the odds of Clint eating a fried candy bar on a stick. 9:30 a.m. I spend most of the morning drafting a memo summarizing my research on the insurance coverage issues. Over the summer I’ve realized just how important thoroughness is in legal research. It may only take a few minutes to find a helpful case, but it will take hours to make sure that there are not any adverse cases of which you are unaware. It takes time, but it’s so important to be able to state with confidence that you have researched all of the relevant caselaw.
Afternoon 12:30 p.m. Associates Chris White and Eoin Dempsey take all of the summer associates to lunch at the Signature Room in the John Hancock Building. The views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline are breathtaking!
2:30 p.m. Back at the office I continue drafting my memo, stopping occasionally to doublecheck a case holding or Bluebook a citation. The afternoon goes quickly, and soon it’s time to say goodbye to one of my fellow summer associates. She and I have become close friends over the summer, and I know we’ll keep in touch , but it’s still sad to say goodbye. I never expected to be so moved by the end of the summer, but I’m really going to miss everyone here at RDB.
