A Week in the Life of Brad Liggett

Tuesday

July 31, 2007: When I got to work this morning, I immediately began to review a project that I had finished the previous week so that I could turn it into the partner who had assigned it. My project was a summary of a client’s deposition transcript. We wanted to have the summary at the ready for trial in the future and we also wanted to be able to use it to prevent our client from being asked the same questions over again in a future deposition. Just as I was finishing with the project, a partner popped into my office and asked me if I had a few minutes to chat. Since I only had a few weeks left as a Summer Associate, we discussed the projects I had been working on over the summer and I got some advice on how best to follow up on my work so that I could make a good impression on the hiring committee. I really appreciated his advice on how to best secure an employment offer at the end of the summer.

That afternoon, a few associates took me out to lunch at Islands, a nearby restaurant. We talked about the cases we were working on as we ate our burgers and cheese fries.

When we got back to the office, I met with two attorneys regarding a pro bono case that we had taken on. I was charged with the task of researching the next step that needed to be taken in a political asylum case that we were working on for a young girl from Central America. As we were discussing the case, I remembered back to when I first interviewed with RDB last October. Despite having been told by my friends in law school that it was an "interview killer," I had asked RDB’s hiring partner in Irvine, Terry McInnis, about RDB’s pro bono practice. Terry responded enthusiastically that RDB takes its pro bono mission seriously and that there would be ample opportunity for me to lend legal aid to people who could otherwise not afford it. I was really excited to be working on my first pro bono matter at RDB.

After work a few of us met up at a nearby driving range to hit a couple buckets of balls in preparation for the annual RDB golf event on Thursday. I must say that my performance on the range did not inspire confidence. We’ll see how it works out.
