Every summer, we hold an in-house trial program for our junior associates, summer associates, and any lateral associates who wish to participate. Everyone takes part in several exercises, such as taking or defending depositions, arguing motions, and conducting direct examinations and cross-examinations. The exercises are based on case materials that generally include a complaint, an answer, depositions, expert reports, and a motion in limine or a motion for summary judgment. Each exercise is preceded by a lecture or demonstration by a firm partner on the basic skills involved in that exercise. Partners also provide feedback on each associate’s performance. The program culminates in a day-long “mini trial,” in which teams of associates conduct a jury trial of the case. The program is very popular with the firm’s associates and summer associates, and we believe it is a key component in developing our junior attorneys.
